Chiuso

Went to the 2nd largest stalactite in the world today (in Sardinia). Over 38 meters long! Wow.
Chiuso.

Then took a drive to the attractive hill town of Bosa on the eastern Green Coast. Really lovely, brightly coloured houses and a 600 year old, hill-top castle.
Chiuso.

Also went up to the Costa Smeralda, a 70 mile stretch of coastline bought by the Aga Khan in the 1960’s and now a playground for the mega-rich.
Chiuso

The Giants’ Tombs we went to were constructed around 1,500BC and were thought to be burial mounds for kings. Impressive. Also Chiuso.

However, last night we found a cracking little backstreet bar in Orosei that used to be the town-centre donkey stables.
Aperto!

Sardinia really is a beautiful place and we’re determined to come back some time. However, for those not fluent in Italian, until 30th March, everything is ‘Chiuso’ ……(closed)…..

Much improved

Weather seems to have blown over and the whole island looks more like the postcards.

Found a nice (appropriately named bar and had a typical Italian dinner (typical Italian prices as well though).

This morning the view from the hotel room in the port is pretty impressive (doesn’t everywhere look better in the sunshine?).

3 Ferries, 36 Hours

Attempting to out-run the 60mph winds and rain (it’s not working!), we’ve spent most of the last 2 days on various sized ferries in rough seas.
Boat 1, leaving Marseilles

20130305-191930.jpg
We were going to Sardinia but after 11hours at sea, got diverted to Propriano in Corsica. Arrived 6.30am.
Drove from Propriano to Bonnifacio in Corsica & managed to find a ferry to Santa Therese in Sardinia (2 hours) Boat 2…..

Leaving Corsica (shame, looks interesting – except weather severe).
Arrived Sardinia. Whole place is shut. Campsites closed or under water. Hotels mostly closed. Therefore….. Boat 3 (even smaller) over to island of La Maddalena.

Currently blowing up a real storm here so found a hotel by the port and battening down the hatches for 48 hours.

Our car must be modern-day Chitty Bang Bang. Check out the satnav position (on last ferry)…..

That’s better….

Something strange happened today. Got to Marseilles; put sunglasses on; saw water without ice on top!
Now there’s a novelty.
Helene feeling pretty crappy so planning a lazy 36 hours while we wait for the boat to Sardinia (after covering 980 road miles in last 2 days).
Can’t say Marseilles has much going for it – looks like one big petrol refinery so far.

Brrrrrrr!

Bloody Hell, -2 (centigrade) tonight. Snow on the ground & turned to ice. Not camping in that! We might be adventurous but we’re not stupid. Checked into a Campanile in Dijon & Helene just demolished a ‘Desert Buffet’.
